Lake of Bays waterfrontLake of Bays in Muskoka has long been a favorite area for cottaging for many reasons but one that's often overlooked is fishing. It's a cold basin lake with over 100 miles of shoreline and as the name would suggest, many bays which can be much shallower. This variation in the lake allows for multiple fish habitats so the list of species is incredible. During the summer the lakes surface temperature averages around 21 °C (70 °F). In the lower levels ( below 30') the temperature drops to a very cold 7 °C (45 °F). At it's deepest point the lake is 230' with and average depth of 73'.

Summer Fishing

The main sport fish in the summer months are Whalleye, Lake trout, pike and bass. If you're going for bass try the shallow bays near the north end of the lake as well as some of the rocky reefs. Personally I like top water fishing for bass so my go-to would be surface spinners or poppers. The trout can be more elusive but folks I've talked to say there's several deep areas near the middle of the lake that produce good results in the fall. It's not uncommon to hear about trout over 20 lbs.being landed late in the year. You can find a very detailed depth map here.

Winter Fishing

Before you venture out, check the ice thickness! This lake varies tremendously from area to area with flows and eddies kepping the ice thin much longer in parts of the lake. Lake trout, Whitefish and smelts are main cold weather fish with several local outfitters availible to take you out if you don't have your own gear. There's also an annual fishing tournament called "The tournament of Legends" that takes place in on Family Day weekend at the beach in Dwight. A portion of the proceeds go to the local Lion's Club and no licence is required that weekend.
