Congratulations on your purchase! (Or was it a sale?) You've got the keys, the trailer is loaded with furniture, you are excitedly opening the cottage and ... oh look, the previous owner left a television unit. And a bedframe. Is that a bag of clothes you spy in the closet? Surprise!
What are you going to do with these extras? One option is to take it to the nearest landfill, but a more environmentally friendly option is to donate! There are several facilities that will take your used furniture, clothing, and even building supplies. Here are a few places that would appreciate your donations:
Habitat for Humanity ReStore Muskoka Locations
400 Pratt Avenue NW, Huntsville
1964 Muskoka Beach Rd, Gravenhurst
ReStores are a fantastic option for your stuff, particularly if you have just renovated or upgraded your appliances. They accept building materials like windows, flooring or doors and will take used furniture or appliances. Proceeds from sales go to local Habitat for Humanity projects and administration. Donations also qualify for a tax receipt, depending on the amount the item sells for.
Salvation Army - Huntsville and Parry Sound
19 Main Street East, Huntsville
82 Joseph Street, Parry Sound
If you've got used clothing or toys, the Salvation Army may be the way to go. The two nearest locations are in Huntsville and Parry Sound. Proceeds from the thrift shops go towards the Salvation Army's charitable work including food banks, shelters, and community programs.
Maple Island Thrift Shop
1 Maple Island Road, Whitestone
The Maple Island Thrift Shop is a wonderful volunteer run operation in Whitestone. They accept donations of all kinds including clothing, furniture, books and toys. Funding goes towards community events and programs including the West Parry Sound Health Centre, Whitestone Library, nursing station, and Harvest Share. 100% of the profit (minus heat and hydro) goes back to the community. New volunteers are always welcome!
